Trevor Baynham and Anthony Bailey

Its been a successful year for club members Trevor Baynham and Anthony Bailey. They  recently won the  'MSA National Gravel Championship - Mintex Two Wheel drive Challenge' in their Ford Escort. Congratulations to them both. Below is a brief account of their year written by Anthony.

Our year started off doing Somerset Stages in April, first stage I made mistake on the notes. I called "flat over brow into slight right into finish" - wrong! It should have been "over brow 90 right into finish". We ended up in ditch up against a wall which damaged the front of car. Spectators got us out and we managed to finish the stage but were awarded a maximum time for that stage. The rest of the event went okay, we finished third in class and 74th overall. Next event was Severn Valley Stages in may. We entered the national rally due to more milage offered.  This is were we entered the two wheel drive Mintex championship .Championship awards were first overall two wheel drive = free entry to the next round of championship.  Had a really good day on the event, tyre wear was the biggest problem.  We finished 14th overall and 1st in class.  This then give us a free entry to Swansea Bay Rally. The Swansea Bay Rally was an excellent event, we had no problems all day and finished 14th overall and 1st in class.  We then won a free entry to Woodpecker Rally!  In between championship rounds, we did the Neath Valley Stages in August, not a good day.  A wrong tyre choice on a rainy day meant several overshoots.  We ended up 24th overhall 2nd in class - wish we had gone to the pub! Next round of the Mintex championship was the Woodpecker Rally in September.  We only needed to start this event and gain one point, this was then  enough to win the champoinship.  This would be another excellent event,  We battled with tyre wear and several several punctures, but our rally ended at the last stage with a broken halfshaft. We were both gutted but we knew we had won the championship and again we were up for another free entry to the next round in Yorkshire. In November we entered the Tempest Rally in Aldershot which we have done several times before.  We had several moments including one major where I asked God for help! In the afternoon we had problem with low sun which lost us time, we finished 14th overall and 3rd in class. The following weekend was the awards presentation in Daventry ,where we recieved awards for 1st in class and 1st overall plus a cheque for £1000. What a year!
