This is a request from Owen Turner, the coordinator of the ROVER CENTRE ENDURANCE ROAD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 -

We are canvassing the views of all endurance rally competitors about tyres for the 2009 season (and beyond). The survey is open to drivers and navigators irrespective of whether or not they are registered as a championsip contender. The only proviso is that you must have competed in at least one endurance rally. Your views are very important for the future success of the formula. The details of the survey can be found on the endurance rally championship website at www.endurance-rallying.co.uk

INTRODUCTION

Thhis was the FIRST ever endurance rally in Britain, and following the success of the previous five WELSH ENDURANCE RALLIES, Amman & District Motor Club Ltd. will be promoting the rally again in the summer of 2008. It is a round of the ROVER CENTRE ENDURANCE ROAD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP 2008.

The event will comply with the endurance rallying regulations specified by the sport's governing body, the Motor Sports Association, with the additional requirement that specified 'control' tyres must be used.  Cars entered in the Endurance Championship must also comply with the championship technical regulations.

Just like previous years, there will be a series of Selectifs on private land during Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning  - with tests up to 20 miles long - plus a traditional road rally of a few hours duration starting late on Saturday evening. The rally will be based around the top of the Neath valley in South Wales.

The event will be quite straightforward and is a test of car and crew, with no tricks and no difficult navigation. Most of the Selectifs will use unsurfaced forest roads, but there will be no car-breaker sections.

This is a two-day Endurance Rally, not a sprint, so the crews must pace themselves and preserving the car must be top priority. Stamina and reliability will be essential ingredients for success.

The Entry fee is £250 for the two-day rally, including a Saturday evening buffet and a barbecue lunch at the Finish. The Entry Fee will be refunded in full if - for whatever reason - the rally is not run.

The rally will support the following registered charities: Cancer Research UK, the Stroke Association, Rookwood Hospital, Wales Air Ambulance Charitable Trust, and the 1st Ynyscedwyn Scouts.

SELECTIF SECTIONS

A Selectif is a test of skill and speed, held entirely on private land. Timed to the second, competitors are required to complete a clearly defined course at an average speed of 40 mph, but the layout of the test makes this a challenge. There will be changes of direction and manoeuvres such as negotiating chicanes, while on the very few straight sections competitors will be required to record the letters and numbers on clearly-visible code boards or report at manned Passage Controls. There will be no manoeuvres requiring reversing.

Precise neat driving will offset lack of power, and offences such as striking a marker or not recording the information on a code board will incur time penalties.

The Selectifs will vary in length and the roads used will be concrete, tar, non-damaging gravel, and grass tracks.

The route to be followed on the Selectifs will be defined by 'Tulip Diagrams', which are pictorial representations of junctions, manoeuvres, etc. These are quite easy to understand and follow, but on all Selectifs the navigator must concentrate hard to keep the driver on the correct route - a test of driver, navigator and car.

SCHEDULE

Competitors can drive down on Saturday morning and complete the Scrutiny and Documentation formalities before the rally starts at 2 pm.

The first leg will consist of several Selectifs, many attempted twice, with a short Tea Halt to enable the test layouts to be changed. Then comes the long Selectif, nearly 20 miles on forest roads!

After a Dinner Halt the rally will restart with a traditional night road rally of a few hours duration.

The last leg on Sunday morning will consist of several more Selectifs, again with most attempted twice.

The first car will be at the Finish by 1 pm, and after a barbecue lunch the Prizegiving Ceremony should start about 3 pm or sooner. Then everyone can be home again on Sunday evening, tired but knowing they’ve completed another arduous Welsh Endurance Road Rally.

REGULATIONS

The Regulations and Entry Forms can be displayed by clicking on the boxes above and can then be printed off. The Technical Regulations are an appendix of the Regulations.

The rally will run under a 'National B' status permit, and Competition Licences issued by the Motor Sports Association will be required. Competitors will be divided into several classes, based on the experience of the crew and on the size of their rally car’s engine.

PERMITTED TYRES: in common with other Endurance Rallies, permitted tyres are those from the

MSA's "List 1A" (see page 196 of the 2008 "Blue Book") or any tyres from

                                            the Colway Road Plus range.

ACCOMMODATION

Competitors will be sent a list of hotels,  b&b., etc. with receipt of entry. The popular camping area outside the Rally HQ will again be available. Competitors' must arrange their own accommodation.

ENTRIES

Entries MUST be made on a printed copy of the Entry Form - faxed and e-mailed copies will be disregarded. The completed form plus the Entry Fee should be sent to the Entries Secretary whose details are given below. The organisers reserve the right to not accept an entry and no reason need be given, but basically it's first come first served.

Text Box: GOT AN UP-TO-1400cc NON-TURBO HISTORIC CAR?
NEW - there's a special class for Historics.

COMPETING ON THE ARDUOUS "LOMBARD" IN NOVEMBER?

Enter the WELSH ENDURO in August as a "shake-down". Then you've got two full months to sort out any niggling problems (and major ones!).

NOT CONFIDENT AT MAP READING?

For the two-hour Night Navigation Leg you'll be given full-colour photocopied maps with the control points already marked. Furthermore, there'll be many "NO" boards out to stop inexperienced crews going wrong. No tricks, no not-as-map junctions, the Night Navigation Leg is straightforward and ideal for beginners.

CAN'T DO REGULARITY SECTIONS?

Don't worry, there aren't any.

LACK CONCENTRATION?    (it isn't an advert for pink pills)

This will be a worry because although the shortest Selectif Section is 3½ miles long, the longest Selectif Section is a whopping TWENTY MILES! That means full concentration by both the driver and the navigator for over half an hour.

A NEWCOMER TO ENDURANCE RALLYING, WITH AN ELIGIBLE CAR, BUT CAN’T AFFORD TO BUY A SET OF THE MANDATORY TYRES JUST FOR THIS ONE RALLY?

For you to “test the water” there’s a special class for cars which comply with all the Technical Regulations except that they’re not running on the mandatory tyres. However, you MUST use closed-block "road" tyres - not forestry tyres - and you’ll be eligible for Class Awards only, not Overall Awards or Championship points.

ON A TIGHT BUDGET?

For £5 per night you can pitch a tent right outside the Rally HQ clubhouse - lots of competitors do every year.
